Modifiers কাকে বলে?

Modifiers এমন কতগুলো শব্দ বা শব্দসমষ্টি যারা অন্য আরেকটি শব্দকে প্রভাবিত করে এবং তার সম্পর্কে নতুন তথ্য প্রদান করে।

Modifiers are words or a set of words that describe or provide additional information of other words in the sentence. It can be a single word, a clause or a phrase.

Example:

  • The boy with the school bag is my brother.
  • The teacher with the question paper entered into the class.

Modifier এর প্রকারভেদ:

There are mainly two types of modifiers. These are:

These are described below:

1. Adjectives Modifiers:

Adjective Modifiers সাধারণত noun অথবা pronoun এর দোষ, গুণ, অবস্থা, ইত্যাদি প্রকাশ করে এবং তার সম্পর্কে নতুন তথ্য যোগ করে।

Adjective modifiers modify or describe nouns and pronouns.

1. Single-word Adjective as modifiers: Adjective may appear before or after the word it modifies.

Example:

  • He caught a small (Here the adjective ‘small’ modifies the noun ‘fish’)
  • She is an outstanding (Here the adjective ‘outstanding’ modifies the noun ‘singer’)

2. The adjective phrase as modifiers: It is a prepositional phrase which modifies a noun or pronoun.

Adjective phrase একটি prepositional phrase যা noun অথবা pronoun কে modify করে। এটি সাধারণত noun এর পরে বসে।

Example:

  • Have you read the novel ‘Pother Panchali’ by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay?
  • Here, the bold portion is an adjective phrase modifying the noun “novel”.

3. The adjective clause as modifiers: The dependent clause which modifies a noun or pronoun and starts with a relative pronoun (who, which, whose, ) is called Adjective clause.

যখন dependent clause গুলো relative pronoun ব্যবহার করে শুরু হয় এবং তার আগের  noun বা pronoun কে modify করে, তখন তারা পুরো একটি clause হিসেবেই সেই noun বা pronoun কে modify করে।

Example:

  • The boy who read the book is my friend.
  • I need a boy who will work hard wholeheartedly.

2. Adverbs Modifiers:

Adverb Modifiers সাধারণত verb, adjective, অথবা অন্য আরেকটি adverb কে modify করে একটি নির্দিষ্ট অর্থ প্রকাশ করে।

Adverb Modifiers modify a verb, an adjective or another adverb and make the meaning of the sentence more specific.

1. Adverbs modifying a verb: Adverb এর প্রধান কাজ হচ্ছে verb কে modify করা।

Example:

  • He is doing the work slowly. (Here, the adverb ‘slowly’ is modifying the verb “doing”)

2. Adverb modifying adjective: Adjective সাধারণত noun কে modify করে কিন্তু adverb সেই adjective কেও modify করে।

Example:

  • She is a very good singer. (Here, very is modifying the adjective “good”)

3. Adverb modifying another adverb: Adverb মাঝে মাঝে অন্যান্য adverb কেও modify করে।

Example:

  • He is going very fast. (Here ‘very’ is modifying the adverb ‘fast’)

4. Adverb phrase as a modifier: Very often an adverb phrase is a prepositional phrase which modifies an adjective, an adverb, or a verb.

Adverb phrase সাধারণত একটি prepositional phrase যা adjective, adverb অথবা verb কে modify করে।

Example:

  • I was excited to see my family was seated in the front row.

5. Adverb clause as modifiers: The dependent clause which modifies a verb, an adjective or an adverb is called an adverb clause.

যখন dependent clause গুলো relative pronoun ব্যবহার করে শুরু হয় এবং তার আগের  verb, adjective, অথবা অন্যান্য adverb কে modify করে, তখন তারা পুরো একটি clause হিসেবেই সেই noun বা pronoun কে modify করে।

Example:

  • When you were three years old, your father

(Here, ‘when he was nine years old’ is an adverb clause and is modifying the verb, “died’.)
